Responsible Gambling in Kenya: Limits, Self-Exclusion and Support
Responsible gambling is the set of decisions and tools that keep betting within limits you choose before you start — a budget, a time limit, a break when you need one. This page brings together what you can set up in your account, an honest self-check for warning signs, and the free support available in Kenya.

Key facts
- Money you bet is money spent. No strategy turns betting into an income.
- Three limits: deposit, loss and session time.
- Two brakes: a cooling-off break and self-exclusion, temporary or permanent.
- Built-in delay: lowering a limit works at once; raising it takes time.
- Self-exclusion can’t be cancelled before the period you chose ends.
- Support: the NACADA toll-free helpline 1192, free and confidential, day or night.
Betting is entertainment, never a way to make money
The operator’s margin is built into the odds and the RTP of every game. Over many bets, the expected result is a loss for the player, whatever the system. A single slip or session can end in profit; a long run usually doesn’t — and in multibets, the margin grows with every extra leg you add.
Treat what you stake like the price of a cinema ticket or a match ticket, not an investment you need to win back. This page isn’t about licensing — that’s covered in betting regulation in Kenya.
The responsible gambling tools in your account
The account area of the CaptainsBet platform offers several different tools. What sets them apart is what happens after you switch them on.
The difference in the third column is deliberate: tightening a limit works straight away, while loosening it comes with a wait of several days. It’s designed to take the decision out of the heat of the moment.
Set them up in your account before you place any bet. 18+ only. Bet responsibly.
How do I set a deposit limit?
Open the responsible gambling section, choose the period and enter your maximum amount; a lower limit is active from that moment. Keep in mind the minimum M-Pesa deposit is KES 100 when you set your deposit limits.
Work out the amount away from betting
Start from what’s left after rent, food, school fees and bills. If nothing’s left, the answer is zero.
Open the responsible gambling section
You’ll find it in your account area, next to the security settings.
Choose daily, weekly or monthly
Daily is the strictest. You can combine periods.
Add the other two
A loss limit and a session limit close the gaps a deposit limit leaves open.
Can I cancel self-exclusion early?
No. Self-exclusion can’t be lifted before the period you chose ends — and that’s exactly why it works. No request to customer support will shorten it, and getting around it with a second account usually ends with the balance frozen: identity checks on your ID and M-Pesa line pick up the duplicate.
How do I know betting has stopped being a pastime?
You can tell by the place betting takes in the rest of your life, not by how much you’ve lost. The questions below, answered yes or no, only help if you’re honest — nobody else will read your answers.
Self-check — yes or no
- Have I bet money I needed for something else, like rent, food or school fees?
- Have I placed more bets the same day to win back what I lost?
- Do I hide how much I bet, or that I bet at all, from the people close to me?
- Have I borrowed to bet — from friends, Fuliza or a mobile loan app?
- Do I bet to stop thinking about a problem or a disappointment?
- Have I decided to stop or cut down and not managed to?
- Have there been arguments at home about money spent on betting?
- Have I lost sleep, skipped work or school, or stopped seeing friends because of time spent betting?
- Do I feel irritable or restless when I can’t bet?
Two or more “yes” answers are a reason to act today: switch on a cooling-off break or temporary self-exclusion in your account and call the NACADA toll-free helpline 1192. You don’t need to be sure before you call.
Managing your money: four rules that stop the spiral
The tools work best with a plan behind them. Money management comes down to four decisions made away from betting — and it’s the fourth that separates an expensive hobby from a real problem.
The type of game changes the risk. In fast rounds — how to play Aviator is the most common question — speed shortens the gap between decisions, so a session time limit matters more than a deposit limit. With slot games, high volatility creates long losing runs that tempt you to raise your stake.
How do I keep children away from betting sites?
With three layers: parental controls, no saved logins and always logging out. Real-money betting is for over-18s only, but protecting children happens on the phone and computer at home.
Dedicated apps and your phone’s built-in filters can block categories of sites for each user.
Don’t save your password in the browser of a shared phone or computer, and never share your M-Pesa PIN.
Closing the tab isn’t the same as logging out. Log out every time and turn on two-step verification.
Where can I get help in Kenya?
Start with the NACADA toll-free helpline on 1192, which offers counselling and referrals for addiction and other psychosocial problems. Other free, confidential services are listed below. None of them charge or need a diagnosis first.
NACADA helpline — 1192. A national toll-free line, open day and night, with trained counsellors who give phone counselling and refer you to treatment or counselling centres. It’s also open to worried family members.
GamHelp Kenya. A Kenyan charity offering free counselling and peer support groups for people affected by gambling, by phone and WhatsApp, around the clock — details at gamhelpkenya.com.
Befrienders Kenya — 0722 178 177 · Kenya Red Cross — 1199. Emotional and psychosocial support if you’re struggling or feeling overwhelmed. A visit to your nearest health facility or doctor is also a good place to start.
What to say to someone close who’s struggling
Start with what you’ve noticed, not the judgement you’ve made. “I’ve noticed you’re betting late at night and you seem worried” opens a conversation; “you’re addicted” shuts it down. Shame is the main reason people hide the problem.
It helps to pick a calm moment, offer to be there for the first phone call and avoid quietly paying off betting debts or Fuliza balances: clearing the debt while nothing else changes often delays getting help. Family members can also call 1192 for themselves.

Yes, that’s what the cooling-off break is for. It blocks access for a short period and ends on its own when the time is up, with no explanation needed.
Yes. The NACADA helpline 1192 also supports affected families, and it’s often a family member who makes the first call. It helps you understand what to say and what support is available near you.
